STONE AGE BOY -

LITERACY RESOURCES FOR YEAR 3-4

Stone Age Boy – Literacy resources for Year 3/4

This half term in English, we are looking at the book Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura.

I’m using this book, because it ties in really well with the topic of Stone Age in History and Materials in Science. As the focus in Maths is 1000 numbers, we can make links between all these subjects to reinforce understanding. It’s also one of the books listed in the National Curriculum for Year 3 and 4.

What to do

1. Year 3 English – Character Descriptions

This is a great book for looking at character descriptions, as children can make  comparisons between the modern clothes the boy might have been wearing, such as trainers and socks, compared to the animal skins and natural products the stone age people would have been wearing, such as bones and stones for jewellery.

You can also discuss what their hair would have been like. Do you think the ancient people combed their hair? If they did, what did they use?

2. Year 3 English –Setting Description

What was it like at their camp? Was their a town nearby? Supermarket? Tall buildings? What did the stone age people live in. This would obviously come from a History lesson about the same topic, but the illustrations in the book can help with these descriptions and ideas.

Help children develop their vocabulary using noun phrases.  Descriptive phrases using lots of adjectives.

For example:

His matted, scruffy brown hair.

Her ragged animal-skin trousers

3. Year 3 English – Planning a story

The easiest way to plan a story is to use the storyline in this book and rewrite it doing the following:

a. Change the characters names

b. Write different descriptions about them

c. Change the some of the events – instead of fishing, maybe the men made a boat. Instead of a sunny day, maybe it was a miserable day and it rained.

d. Use different words to describe the new events and what happened
